Best Betting Sites in Netherlands 2026

The Netherlands is the only EU market where a single self-exclusion register, CRUKS, locks you out of every licensed operator at once the moment you tick the box. That's the lens I use to judge a Dutch sportsbook. Since the Wet kansspelen op afstand opened the regulated market on 1 October 2021, I've opened, funded and bet real money through every KSA-licensed book I could get an iDEAL deposit into, plus a long tail of offshore alternatives. This is my ranked list of the best betting sites in the Netherlands for 2026. The comparison table comes first. Then the hard data, pros and cons, and the player-protection rules you need before you deposit. Confirm any operator on the KSA register before signing up.

Search "beste gokwebsites Nederland" and you get a hundred lists. They rarely agree. They almost never explain why. I do this for a living. So I rank on what matters in a post-KOA Dutch market: how clean the iDEAL flow is, how the operator handles the 24+ slot threshold and the monthly deposit limit, market depth on Eredivisie and darts, and proper KSA licensing. No headline-bonus hype, because the KSA doesn't let me publish bonus figures anyway.

Compliance note (please read): Dutch online sports betting is regulated by the Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) under the Wet kansspelen op afstand (KOA), in force since 1 October 2021. Three rules you can't ignore: (1) every licensed operator must check the CRUKS register before letting you play, so a single self-exclusion blocks you across the whole market; (2) 24+ is the minimum age for high-risk games (slots, live casino) as of 2024, 18+ for sports betting; (3) no credit cards, no untargeted advertising, no role-model figures and no sport-shirt sponsorship of Eredivisie kits since the 2025 clean-up. I do not publish welcome-bonus headline figures on this page. The KSA's advertising rules mean you'll only see an offer after you've created an account on a licensed operator's own site.

What the tags mean. KSA licensed = on the official Kansspelautoriteit register of licensed online providers, so it is legal for Dutch residents and bound by CRUKS, the 24+ slot threshold and Dutch deposit-limit rules. Offshore (no KSA) = no Dutch licence. The KSA actively blocks marketing and payment rails of offshore operators serving Dutch residents, so these sites sit outside Dutch consumer protections and you bet at your own risk. I include them for completeness, not as a recommendation.

What CRUKS means for Dutch players

This is the section nobody else writes properly, and it's the most important thing to understand before you open your first account. CRUKS stands for Centraal Register Uitsluiting Kansspelen, the Dutch central register for gambling exclusion. Every operator with a KSA licence is required to check it against your DigiD-verified identity before they let you place a single bet.

Three practical consequences:

  • One opt-in, full lockout. If you register yourself on CRUKS, you are blocked from every licensed Dutch sportsbook and online casino at the same moment, for a minimum of six months. There is no "I'll just sign up at the next one" workaround inside the regulated market.
  • Family or court referrals. A partner, family member or court can also request you be added to CRUKS if there's evidence of harm. You get a hearing, and the KSA decides.
  • Operators that don't check lose their licence. The KSA has fined and even pulled licences from sites that failed CRUKS checks. So when an offshore site offers to "skip the register," that's not a feature. That's the legal grey market.

What it means in practice: if you sometimes feel you're chasing losses, CRUKS is the cleanest off-switch available anywhere in Europe. Use it. You can register, or read more, at cruks.nl.

Operator data at a glance: KSA-licensed Dutch sportsbooks

Opinions are cheap, so here are the numbers. These are the KSA-licensed Dutch betting sites I tested most. All figures are in euros and current at publication. They vary by method, so check the cashier once you're logged in.

Operator data: offshore international books (use with caution)

These bookmakers show up on a lot of "best betting sites in the Netherlands" lists. None of them holds a KSA licence. Most are blocked from accepting Dutch deposits via iDEAL, and the KSA has been active in pushing payment providers to drop them. A few are casino-led brands with a sportsbook bolted on. Limits and crypto coverage can look generous, but you sit outside CRUKS, the deposit limit framework and Dutch consumer protections if a dispute arises. I include them for completeness, with the caveat up front.

Offshore and grey-market operators. Most cannot legally market to or accept iDEAL from Dutch residents. Figures change often, so confirm them on-site.

How welcome offers and T&Cs actually work in the Netherlands

The KSA's advertising regime is one of the strictest in Europe. Sport-shirt sponsorship of Eredivisie kits was phased out across 2024 and 2025, role-model figures are banned in any ad, and untargeted advertising on TV, radio and outdoor was scrapped under the Besluit ongerichte reclame kansspelen op afstand. So I'm not going to quote you bonus headlines. I will show you the mechanics, then you read the small print yourself on a licensed operator's site after you've registered.

  • You opt in, not the operator. Bonuses can only be presented to you after you've created an account on the operator's site and actively requested or accepted them. The 18 to 24 age bracket is excluded from any bonus or promotional targeting full stop.
  • Wagering and minimum odds. Most Dutch sportsbook welcome offers are free-bet tokens with a 1x play-through and minimum odds around 1.50. Casino bonuses carry heavier rollover, often 25x to 35x on the bonus.
  • Deposit limits are mandatory. The KSA requires every licensed operator to ask you to set a monthly deposit limit at signup, and to confirm or revise it at the renewal point. Operators may not raise your limit instantly. There is a cooling-off period before increases take effect, and they have to do a financial check above certain thresholds.
  • Cool-off after big losses. Operators must pause user accounts and prompt a conversation when loss thresholds are hit. This is not a soft nudge. It's enforced and the KSA audits it.
  • Expiry. Bonus tokens typically expire in 7 to 30 days. Anything you don't use is forfeited.
  • Eligible payment methods. Some books exclude certain methods from bonus eligibility. Watch the small print, especially around e-wallets.

My rule of thumb: a small bonus with 1x rollover and a 7-day expiry beats a big headline number locked behind 35x. And honestly, the bigger story in the Dutch market right now is the deposit limit and the loss cool-off, not the bonus. Pick a book that handles those well and the bonus is a side dish.

How I tested these Dutch betting sites

No theory. Just the five things that decide whether a Dutch bookmaker is worth your iDEAL deposit.

Market depth (Eredivisie, KNVB Beker, darts, speed skating)

Mainstream coverage is the baseline. What separates the best Dutch betting sites is local depth: Eredivisie player props (Ajax, PSV, Feyenoord), KNVB Beker rounds, full PDC darts coverage, KNSB speed skating finals and cycling Grand Tour specials. Toto and Unibet.nl run the deepest Dutch-team books I logged. bet365.nl is the benchmark for darts and global football breadth.

Odds and pricing

Bonuses get the headlines. Price is what compounds. I compared the vig on Eredivisie 1X2, PSV/Ajax/Feyenoord match-result markets, and PDC futures across the licensed market. Pinnacle prices sharpest as always, but it's offshore. Among KSA books, Unibet.nl and VBET.nl were the most consistent on Eredivisie pre-match prices.

Payments and withdrawal speed (iDEAL, Trustly, Klarna)

iDEAL accounts for the bulk of Dutch online betting deposits, and the cashier UX is the single most-tested feature on every Dutch site. I timed real withdrawals. BetCity.nl's TrueLayer-powered iDEAL payouts were the fastest I logged, often inside an hour and reliably under 24. Toto via Trustly was the close runner-up, usually same-day. No KSA-licensed operator accepts credit cards. That's a regulator rule, not an operator quirk.

App and live betting

I do most of my in-play betting on a phone. LeoVegas.nl has the slickest app I used this year, by some margin. bet365.nl pairs reliable in-play with live streaming, early cash-out and the deepest event tree on darts and tennis.

Licensing and trust

Non-negotiable. I verify every operator against the live KSA register. The KSA whitelist is public and updated as licences are granted, suspended or revoked. I also check the operator's CRUKS implementation: how clearly it surfaces self-exclusion in the cashier, how the loss-threshold cool-off is communicated, whether the under-24 deposit limit framework is honest. The good operators treat these as a feature. The mediocre ones bury them.

Top 25 betting sites in Netherlands: ranked, reviewed, with pros and cons

1. 22bet: biggest global market spread

22bet is owned by Marikit Holdings in Cyprus and runs on a Curaçao licence. If you want sheer variety, it covers an enormous range of sports and leagues, plus esports and a casino. The minimum deposit is €1. The flip side for Dutch players is significant: it doesn't hold a KSA licence, the KSA actively blocks marketing of offshore brands in the Netherlands, and iDEAL availability is not guaranteed. So you're betting outside Dutch consumer protections and outside CRUKS.

Pros

  • Enormous market spread, 1,000+ events daily
  • Huge sport and league range incl. esports
  • Many payment options incl. crypto
  • Very low €1 minimum deposit

Cons

  • Offshore, no KSA licence
  • Outside CRUKS and Dutch deposit limits
  • iDEAL availability not guaranteed
  • Cluttered interface for new users

2. BetLabel: crypto and modern payments all-rounder

BetLabel launched in 2023 and is operated by TechSolutions Group. It runs on Curaçao and Kahnawake licences (No. 000882) and shares a stable with National Casino and Bizzo. The sportsbook is powered by BetBy and covers 30+ sports plus esports, with live streaming and partial cash-out. It's a polished offshore product, but it has no KSA licence and the same offshore caveats apply: no CRUKS, no Dutch loss-cool-off, and iDEAL acceptance is uncertain.

Pros

  • Curaçao and Kahnawake licensed
  • 15+ payment methods incl. crypto
  • Live streaming and partial cash-out
  • Clean, modern UX

Cons

  • Offshore, no KSA licence
  • Outside CRUKS
  • Short track record
  • RG tools need support to set

3. Ivibet: casino-led, with esports

Ivibet has been on the European map since 2022, operated by TechOptions Group on Curaçao and Kahnawake licences. It's casino-led, with 6,000+ games, but the sportsbook still covers 30+ sports and esports. Payments include ecoPayz, MuchBetter and 15+ cryptos. As an offshore brand it's outside the KSA framework, and Dutch players should treat it as such.

Pros

  • Kahnawake and Curaçao licensed
  • 6,000+ casino games
  • Broad payments including crypto
  • Provably fair games

Cons

  • Offshore, no KSA licence
  • Outside CRUKS
  • Sportsbook secondary to casino
  • No iDEAL guarantee

4. HellSpin: casino only, no sportsbook

One to flag clearly. HellSpin is a casino brand, not a sportsbook. There's no sports betting here at all. It launched in 2022 on a Curaçao licence, with 4,000+ games. I include it because it appears on many "best Dutch betting sites" lists, but sports bettors should look elsewhere, and even casino players should remember it sits outside the Dutch 24+ slot threshold and CRUKS.

Pros

  • Large casino library
  • Crypto and e-wallet support
  • Fast e-wallet payouts
  • Clean dark-themed UI

Cons

  • No sportsbook at all
  • Offshore, no KSA licence
  • Outside CRUKS and 24+ rule
  • Limited RG tools

5. BetRepublic: a newer offshore all-rounder

BetRepublic is a newer offshore sportsbook and casino sharing one wallet. It takes Skrill, Neteller and crypto, plus cards. The main concern is transparency: its licensing details are not clearly displayed, which I'd want fixed before recommending. For Dutch players it's offshore, so the standard caveats apply: no KSA, no CRUKS, no Dutch deposit-limit framework.

Pros

  • Clean on desktop and mobile
  • In-house RG self-assessment
  • Wide payment menu

Cons

  • Weak licensing transparency
  • Short track record
  • Offshore, no KSA licence
  • Outside CRUKS

6. KingMaker: casino and sportsbook combo

KingMaker debuted in 2024, operated by NovaForge Limited on an Anjouan licence (ALSI-152406028-F12). Casino and sportsbook share a wallet, and the sportsbook covers 40+ sports with strong esports, in-play and pre-game. Anjouan is the weakest of the offshore licences in my opinion, with limited dispute resolution. For Dutch players that's a real consideration. Plus, no KSA licence, no CRUKS, no Dutch protections.

Pros

  • 40+ sports plus strong esports
  • Very wide payments incl. crypto
  • Fast crypto payouts
  • Shared casino wallet

Cons

  • Anjouan licence only (weak oversight)
  • Offshore, no KSA licence
  • Busy interface
  • E-wallets excluded from bonus

7. Toto: state-owned, Eredivisie heritage

Toto is the online sportsbook of Nederlandse Loterij, the state-owned lottery operator, and it ran a near-monopoly on legal Dutch sports betting pre-KOA. Now it competes in an open market and it's still the most "Dutch-feeling" book I tested. Eredivisie depth is excellent, KNVB Beker coverage is comprehensive, and the integration with the Nederlandse Loterij ecosystem (TOTOWinkel retail, EuroJackpot) is seamless. iDEAL deposits are instant. Trustly withdrawals are usually same-day and rarely over 48 hours.

Pros

  • State-owned, KSA licensed day-one
  • Deepest Eredivisie and KNVB Beker book
  • Fast Trustly withdrawals
  • Strong CRUKS and RG implementation

Cons

  • Odds rarely the sharpest
  • Limited global market depth
  • UX is functional rather than slick

8. bet365.nl: best for in-play and live streaming

Still the benchmark for live betting and streaming worldwide, and now KSA-licensed in the Netherlands. bet365.nl carries 1,000+ markets across 30+ sports, plus cash-out and a rock-solid app. Payments are KSA-compliant: iDEAL, Trustly, debit cards, bank transfer. The minimum is €10 and there are no withdrawal fees. iDEAL payouts were typically 2 to 24 hours in my testing.

Pros

  • Best-in-class live streaming and cash-out
  • 1,000+ markets, 30+ sports
  • Deep darts and tennis trees
  • No withdrawal fees

Cons

  • Welcome offer headline modest under KSA
  • Can restrict sharp accounts
  • Menu depth steep for new users

9. Unibet.nl: big Kindred brand, sharp Eredivisie lines

Unibet.nl is owned by the Kindred Group and has been a day-one KSA licensee since 1 October 2021. The Eredivisie price feed is among the sharpest on the licensed market, and the cashier supports Klarna instant alongside the standard iDEAL and Trustly. Live streaming covers football and tennis at a serviceable level. The app is solid, if a step behind LeoVegas.

Pros

  • Kindred Group, KSA licensed day-one
  • Sharp Eredivisie 1X2 pricing
  • Klarna instant supported
  • Reasonable live streaming

Cons

  • App trails LeoVegas
  • Darts depth thinner than bet365.nl
  • RG flow is occasionally clunky

10. BetCity.nl: fastest iDEAL payouts I logged

BetCity.nl was acquired by Entain in 2022 and has built a genuinely Dutch-feeling operation on top of Entain's tech. The standout is payout speed: iDEAL withdrawals via TrueLayer were the fastest I logged on any KSA-licensed book, regularly inside an hour and reliably under 24. Eredivisie coverage is strong, KNVB Beker is well-handled, and the Dutch language UX is the cleanest I've used.

Pros

  • Fastest iDEAL payouts I logged (TrueLayer)
  • Entain backing post-2022 acquisition
  • Cleanest Dutch-language UX
  • Strong Eredivisie + KNVB Beker book

Cons

  • Smaller global market spread
  • Live streaming limited vs bet365.nl
  • App polish a step behind LeoVegas

11. TonyBet.nl: multi-sport all-rounder, darts depth

TonyBet.nl got its KSA licence after the day-one cohort and brings the multi-sport breadth the TonyBet group is known for elsewhere in Europe. Darts depth is particularly good, which matters in a country that produces Michael van Gerwen. UFC and boxing markets are above average too. iDEAL withdrawals run 1 to 3 business days.

Pros

  • KSA licensed
  • Strong PDC darts book
  • Decent UFC and boxing depth
  • Combined sportsbook and casino

Cons

  • iDEAL payouts slower than BetCity
  • UI feels less Dutch-native
  • Promotions thin under KSA rules

12. Jacks.nl: Dutch retail tie-in (BAS Gaming)

Jacks.nl is the online arm of JVH Gaming (BAS Gaming), the largest land-based casino operator in the Netherlands. The retail-to-online tie-in is real: you can use your online account at land-based Jack's Casino venues. The sportsbook is competent rather than spectacular, but the trust premium for a Dutch player who already knows the brand is significant.

Pros

  • Major Dutch retail brand
  • Online + land-based account integration
  • KSA licensed
  • Strong CRUKS implementation

Cons

  • Sportsbook secondary to casino
  • Limited global market depth
  • Live streaming basic

13. Holland Casino Online: state-owned casino arm

Holland Casino Online is the digital extension of the state-owned Holland Casino retail business. It was a day-one KSA licensee. The product is casino-led: this is not the place to come for deep sports markets. But for Dutch players who value the state-backed trust and the seamless tie-in to the 14 Holland Casino venues, it earns its slot in the top 15.

Pros

  • State-owned, day-one KSA licensee
  • Tie-in to 14 retail venues
  • Excellent RG and CRUKS flow
  • Strong trust signal

Cons

  • Casino-led, thin sportsbook
  • Live streaming limited
  • Odds rarely sharp

14. Bingoal: Belgian crossover, niche markets

Bingoal is a Belgian-headquartered group that holds licences across BE, NL and several other EU markets. Its strength is niche-market depth: cycling Grand Tours, lower-tier European football, Dutch hockey league, KNSB speed skating. If you bet on anything outside the mainstream, Bingoal often has the line where the bigger books don't.

Pros

  • Strong niche market depth
  • Cycling, hockey, speed skating coverage
  • KSA licensed
  • Cross-market BE/NL brand recognition

Cons

  • Mainstream odds less competitive
  • UX feels Belgian rather than Dutch
  • App could be sharper

15. LeoVegas.nl: best mobile app

LeoVegas.nl is owned by MGM Resorts and built mobile-first. It has one of the nicest apps I used this year: fast, well-designed, and with a strong reputation for quick payouts. It's KSA-licensed with a €10 minimum deposit. The sportsbook is solid rather than market-leading, but the app experience genuinely pulls the whole proposition up a rank.

Pros

  • Best mobile app in the Dutch market
  • Fast payouts reputation
  • MGM backing, KSA licensed
  • Excellent biometric login

Cons

  • Odds and markets mid-pack
  • Sportsbook secondary to casino
  • Promotions thin under KSA rules

16. 711.nl: JOI Gaming brand

711.nl is operated by JOI Gaming, a sister company to Jack's Casino. It launched into the KSA-regulated market with a casino-led pitch and a smaller but well-priced sportsbook. The Dutch language UX is excellent and the brand has built up a reasonable share of the market quickly.

Pros

  • KSA licensed, JOI Gaming backing
  • Excellent Dutch-language UX
  • Fast iDEAL flow

Cons

  • Sportsbook smaller than casino
  • Limited live streaming
  • Niche-market depth thin

17. BetNation: Dutch operator, friendly UX

BetNation is a smaller Dutch-licensed operator that has built a reputation for friendly customer service and clean Dutch-language UX. The market spread is smaller than the top 10, but the basics are well-executed. A reasonable second account for Dutch-team specials.

Pros

  • KSA licensed
  • Friendly Dutch customer service
  • Clean UX

Cons

  • Smaller market spread
  • App basic
  • Brand awareness low outside NL

18. Circus.nl: casual sportsbook plus casino

Circus.nl is the Dutch arm of the Belgian Circus group. It's casino-led, with a competent but secondary sportsbook attached. It's a fine all-rounder for casual bettors who also play slots and live casino, but if sports is your main use case, the top 10 books are stronger.

Pros

  • KSA licensed
  • Decent casino library
  • Established Belgian brand

Cons

  • Sportsbook secondary to casino
  • Niche-market depth thin
  • App not best-in-class

19. BetMGM Nederland: US/EU brand power, slick app

BetMGM Nederland is the Dutch arm of the MGM Resorts and Entain joint venture that dominates the US sports betting market. It came to the KSA market later than some, and the local Eredivisie product is decent rather than market-leading. But the app is slick, the brand carries weight, and Entain's tech stack handles the iDEAL flow cleanly.

Pros

  • KSA licensed, MGM/Entain backing
  • Slick app, biometric login
  • Reliable iDEAL flow

Cons

  • Came to NL market later than some
  • Eredivisie depth not market-leading
  • Welcome offer headline modest under KSA

20. Fairplay Casino: long-established Dutch brand

Fairplay Casino is another JVH Gaming brand, sister to Jacks.nl. It's casino-led with an attached sportsbook. The brand goes back decades in Dutch retail. Online, it's a competent if unexciting choice for Dutch players who already know the name.

Pros

  • JVH Gaming brand, KSA licensed
  • Decades-old Dutch brand
  • Strong RG flow

Cons

  • Sportsbook secondary to casino
  • Limited niche markets
  • App basic

21. Kansino: Volt-owned, clean Dutch UX

Kansino is owned by Volt Group and pitched at Dutch casual players. It's almost entirely casino, with only a thin sportsbook attached. Mentioned here because it appears on many Dutch "best of" lists, but sports bettors should look elsewhere.

Pros

  • KSA licensed
  • Clean Dutch UX
  • Strong RG flow

Cons

  • Effectively casino-only
  • Sportsbook minimal
  • Not for serious bettors

22. Hommerson: family-run retail-to-online

Hommerson is a family-owned Dutch operator that came online via the KSA framework. The retail-to-online story is real, and the brand carries trust in its core regions. The online product is competent. Niche choice rather than market leader.

Pros

  • Dutch family-owned, KSA licensed
  • Retail tie-in
  • Local trust

Cons

  • Smaller market spread
  • App and UX basic
  • Niche regional appeal

23. VBET.nl: sharp pricing on niche sports

VBET.nl is the Dutch arm of the VBET group, which has built a reputation across Europe for sharp pricing on niche sports: esports, cycling, lower-tier football. In the Dutch market it competes on price rather than brand. A useful second account for value hunters.

Pros

  • KSA licensed
  • Sharp niche-market pricing
  • Strong esports book

Cons

  • Lower brand awareness
  • UX less polished than top 10
  • Live streaming limited

24. PokerStars Casino NL: Flutter brand, poker-led

PokerStars Casino NL is a Flutter Entertainment brand, with the PokerStars name carrying significant weight among Dutch poker players. The sports product is thin. Mentioned for completeness and for the brand recognition.

Pros

  • Flutter Entertainment backing
  • KSA licensed
  • Strong poker product

Cons

  • Sports product thin
  • Casino smaller than top brands
  • Not a sportsbook-first choice

25. Pinnacle: sharpest odds, high limits

The sharp bettor's choice. Pinnacle's pricing and limits are excellent and it doesn't restrict winning players the way many books do. The catch for Dutch players: it's offshore, with no KSA licence. So you sit outside CRUKS and Dutch consumer protections, and the KSA actively pushes payment providers to drop offshore brands serving Dutch residents. Use with care, if at all.

Pros

  • Sharpest market prices
  • Very high limits
  • Does not limit winning players
  • Crypto accepted

Cons

  • Offshore, no KSA licence
  • No live streaming
  • No welcome offer
  • Steep UI for beginners

Best Dutch sportsbook by category

Best for Eredivisie and KNVB Beker

Toto still runs the deepest Dutch-football book. Unibet.nl has the sharpest Eredivisie pre-match pricing.

Best for Champions League and Dutch national team

bet365.nl for breadth and live streaming on European nights. Unibet.nl for sharper match-result pricing on Oranje fixtures.

Best for darts (PDC, Premier League Darts)

The Netherlands is the darts capital of the world. bet365.nl runs the deepest event tree on the World Championship, Premier League Darts and the Player Championship circuit. TonyBet.nl is the close runner-up.

Best for speed skating and cycling

Bingoal for niche depth (KNSB speed skating finals, Vuelta/Giro/Tour specials). Toto covers the major events without the niche prop depth.

Best mobile app

LeoVegas.nl, the most polished phone experience in the KSA-licensed market.

Best for fast withdrawals

BetCity.nl for the fastest iDEAL payouts I logged via TrueLayer, often inside an hour. Toto via Trustly is the close runner-up.

Best for high rollers

Honestly, the Dutch deposit-limit framework makes high-roller play hard inside the regulated market. Pinnacle for top limits and sharp prices is the international answer, but it's offshore and outside CRUKS.

Best for casual or low-stakes bettors

Holland Casino Online and Jacks.nl for state-backed or major-retail trust, easy UX and clean RG flow.

Which Dutch teams and athletes can you bet on?

All the obvious ones, and a few the rest of Europe doesn't notice. Eredivisie covers the historic big three: Ajax (Amsterdam), PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord Rotterdam, plus AZ Alkmaar, FC Twente, FC Utrecht and the rest of the top flight. The KNVB Beker (Dutch FA Cup) runs midweek through the season. The Dutch national team carries deep markets on every international break, with Memphis Depay, Frenkie de Jong and the next generation drawing volume. Beyond football: PDC darts is a national obsession with Michael van Gerwen, Danny Noppert and the new wave. KNSB speed skating draws heavy action in the World Cup and Olympic seasons. Cycling Grand Tours (Vuelta, Giro, Tour de France) get strong coverage on the back of Mathieu van der Poel, Annemiek van Vleuten and the wider Dutch cycling tradition. Field hockey (men's and women's) is another Dutch dominance. UFC cards with Dutch fighters also draw real volume.

Timeline: the history of betting in the Netherlands

It helps to know how we got here, because the Dutch market went from one of Europe's most closed to one of its most strictly regulated in a single legislative move. Dates are confirmed against the KSA's own historical timeline and the parliamentary record on the Wet kansspelen op afstand.

1726

Lotteries first authorised in the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. State-licensed lotteries become the foundation of Dutch gambling regulation, a thread that runs all the way to today's Nederlandse Loterij.

1964

The Wet op de kansspelen (Games of Chance Act) is enacted, establishing the modern framework for state-run lotteries, casinos and sports pools.

1976

Holland Casino is founded as the state-owned monopoly land-based casino operator. It still runs 14 venues today.

1990s

Toto, the state sports betting pool, becomes the dominant legal sports betting product. Offshore online sites operate in a grey area, blocked from official advertising but accessible.

2012

The Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) is established as the central Dutch gambling regulator, with a mandate covering all forms of gambling but limited enforcement powers over online operators.

2014 to 2019

The Wet kansspelen op afstand bill is drafted, debated and amended through both chambers of parliament. The KSA prepares the licensing framework.

19 February 2019

The Eerste Kamer (Senate) passes the Remote Gambling Act, opening the path to a licensed online market.

1 April 2021

The KOA comes into force. The KSA opens the licence application window.

1 October 2021

The first 10 licensed operators go live in a regulated Dutch online market. Toto, Unibet, Holland Casino, BetCity, TOTO and others are day-one licensees. The grey market officially ends.

1 July 2023

Untargeted online gambling advertising is banned under the Besluit ongerichte reclame kansspelen op afstand. Sports kit and role-model advertising restrictions follow.

1 October 2024

Mandatory deposit limits introduced. Initial cross-operator limits set: €700 per month for 25+ and €300 per month for 18 to 24, with mandatory financial checks above thresholds and cooling-off periods on limit increases. The 24+ minimum age for high-risk games (slots, live casino) is enforced.

2025

Sports-shirt sponsorship of Eredivisie kits by gambling brands phased out. KSA tightens licence rules for renewals. Channelisation rates publicly debated as the illegal market begins to grow again.

2026

The KSA sets 2026 priorities around illegal-site enforcement, under-24 protection and tougher checks on licensed operators. A full advertising ban on online gambling is publicly discussed but not yet enacted.

One trend worth flagging. Channelisation, the share of Dutch online gambling that runs through licensed operators, has fallen since the deposit limits and ad restrictions came in, with the KSA warning that the illegal market overtook the legal market by revenue in 2025. That is a real concern for player protection. The regulator's 2026 priorities are explicitly about enforcement against illegal sites and tighter compliance from licensed operators. So expect more change in the licensed market through this year. Sources: KSA, with industry context from iGaming Business and Sigma World.

Quick facts: age, taxes and payments

  • Minimum age: 18+ for sports betting; 24+ for high-risk games (slots, live casino) since the 2024 amendment.
  • Taxes on winnings: Dutch kansspelbelasting (gambling tax) applies to winnings over €449 per game on most products. At KSA-licensed sites the operator withholds and remits this on your behalf. At foreign-licensed sites the player is theoretically liable. The headline rate has moved over recent years: it was raised to 30.5% in 2024 and to 34.2% in 2025. Confirm the current figure before filing. I'm not a tax advisor; this is general information.
  • Payments: iDEAL is dominant by a wide margin (around 70%+ of online betting deposits). Trustly is the most common withdrawal rail. Klarna, Maestro and Visa Debit are common. No credit cards at any KSA-licensed site: it's a regulator rule.
  • Self-exclusion: CRUKS. One register, full lockout across every licensed operator, minimum six months.
  • Deposit limits: mandatory, set at signup, cooling-off period before increases. Cross-operator caps for 18 to 24 are notably tighter than 25+.

FAQ: best betting sites in the Netherlands

Is online betting legal in the Netherlands?

Yes, under the Wet kansspelen op afstand since 1 October 2021. You must be 18+ for sports betting (24+ for high-risk casino games) and use a KSA-licensed operator.

What is CRUKS?

The Centraal Register Uitsluiting Kansspelen: the Dutch central self-exclusion register. Once you register, every KSA-licensed operator must block you for at least six months. It's the cleanest off-switch available anywhere in the EU.

Can I use iDEAL?

Yes. iDEAL is the dominant deposit method at every KSA-licensed Dutch betting site, with deposits instant and withdrawals via Trustly or TrueLayer typically same-day or next-day.

Why are there no credit cards?

The KSA bans credit cards at licensed gambling sites in the Netherlands. You'll see iDEAL, Trustly, Klarna and debit cards (Maestro, Visa Debit). No Visa Credit, no Mastercard Credit.

Why don't Dutch sites advertise bonuses publicly?

Under Dutch advertising rules, bonuses can only be presented to a registered account holder, not in public marketing. The 18 to 24 age bracket is excluded entirely from promotional targeting.

How fast are withdrawals?

It varies. BetCity.nl via TrueLayer returned iDEAL cash-outs inside an hour in my testing. Toto via Trustly was typically same-day. Most other licensed books run 24 to 48 hours.

What's the deposit limit?

You set your own limit at signup. Cross-operator caps apply: notably tighter for the 18 to 24 age bracket. Operators must enforce a cooling-off period before increases.

Are winnings taxed?

Yes, via Dutch kansspelbelasting on winnings over €449 per game. KSA-licensed operators withhold and remit on your behalf. Foreign-licensed sites do not, which can leave you liable.

Is crypto betting legal?

No KSA-licensed site accepts crypto. Crypto betting in the Netherlands lives only on offshore books, outside Dutch consumer protections.

Best app for live betting?

LeoVegas.nl has the slickest app I used in the KSA-licensed market. bet365.nl is the deepest for live betting on darts and tennis.

My take: where I'd open my first account

This is my opinion as someone who does this for a living. It's not a verdict, and not a push to bet. If Eredivisie is your sport, I'd start with Toto for the depth or Unibet.nl for the sharper prices. If withdrawal speed matters most, BetCity.nl is the fastest iDEAL book I've logged. Darts and tennis specialists should be on bet365.nl. Phone-first bettors will get on best with LeoVegas.nl. And before any of that, set your deposit limit honestly. CRUKS exists for a reason and the regulated market is built around using it. Wherever you land, pick a KSA-licensed bookmaker. The consumer protections are worth more than any headline offer the offshore brands wave at you.

Bet responsibly. You must be 18+ for sports betting in the Netherlands, and 24+ for high-risk games (slots, live casino). Gambling can be addictive. Set deposit and time limits, never chase losses, and only stake what you can afford to lose. If gambling stops being fun, free, confidential help is available through Loket Kansspel (0900-2177721) and the self-exclusion register at CRUKS. Every KSA-licensed operator must offer deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion via CRUKS.
